Last week our gardener showed up with a pretty nifty new toy. It was a lawnmower, but nothing like anything I have ever observed before. This lawn mower is one that you ride standing up--it's a cross between a mower that you ride and a Segway personal transport system. He sure looked as if he was having a good time.
Apparently these mowers are quite popular on many golf courses. If you want your lawn to look golf course perfect, one of the secrets is to mow it in a different direction each time it's mowed. Using the same pattern every time causes the grass lay in the same direction. This can start to create ruts. It also hurts the grass. Both sides of a blade of grass are capable of conducting photosynthesis (turning the sun's energy into food for the plant.) When you mow in one direction only, the same side is always exposed to the sun. This reduces the blade's ability to nourish itself.
Some other tips include keeping your grass longer in the summer time so it won't be burned by the sun and die. If you don't have too many clippings, it's also smart to let them go back into the ground to nourish the soil.
