Indecision and procrastination are two of the most damaging behaviors that can harm your business. If you want to put break through an issue where you are stuck, it may be much easier than you realize.
Have you been frozen with indecision from having too many options to choose from? For example, you need a new phone but you can’t decide which phone is right for you. You want the iPhone but the AT&T service in your area is poor. On the other hand, Android would be great, but it won’t work well with the new iPad you just purchased. The result is that you keep wavering back and forth without making a decision.
The problem with being stuck is that no decision is still a decision—it’s a decision to remain in limbo. The issue for most people is that the change requires too much effort to make so they stay stuck where they are. The result is that your confidence as well as your profitability often either slows down or is sometimes stopped entirely.
To stay on the cutting edge in your business, it’s important to have a strategy when you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling with a decision. Here are three simple steps you can take to break through being stuck and get back into action.
1. Write down all the potential solutions to the issue, no matter how silly or illogical
A major way that most people stay stuck is that they keep replaying different solutions to the issue over and over. The secret is to write down as many solutions or alternatives as possible to the solution. For example, if you are angry with your clients, it’s all right to write down, “I’m going to fire them,” even if you would never consider doing so. The idea is to give yourself as many options as possible and then pick the one that has the greatest likelihood of success.
2. Choose the best possible solution
After you complete your list, review it to determine which option will yield the best result. If you’re not happy with your options, you can seek out the help of a friend or other trusted resource such as a coach or mentor.
3. Take One Simple Action Step
The way most people get stuck is that they become overwhelmed. There’s an old quotation from Lao Tzu that says, “A journey of 10,000 miles begins with a single step.” Rather than looking at all you need to do to reach your goal, look at the simple step that you can take today. Successful people reach their goals a single step at a time. If you’re facing a tough problem, identify one simple action step that you could take to begin the process of tackling that problem. You’ll be surprised how great you will feel and how much easier the second step will be.
